John Powers is Critic at Large for NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross and writes about film for The Los Angeles Review of Books. He is the co-author of WKW: The Cinema of Wong Kar Wai (2016) which he wrote with Wong. His 2004 book, Sore Winners (and the Rest of Us) in George Bush’s America, is a study of American culture in the new oughts. Powers was the long-time film critic at Vogue, and before that, at LA Weekly. His work has appeared in New York, Rolling Stone, Harper’s, The Nation, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and Gourmet, for which he served as Southeast Asia Correspondent. In 1993, he co-directed the BBC documentary I Am a Sex Addict with Vikram Jayanti (who, like Mr. Powers, is not a sex addict). He lives in Pasadena.
